Fairfax, Virginia, April 19, 2024 — It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you that Edwin Berry Weisiger, one of the owners of Fairfax Ice Arena, our colleague and dear friend, passed away unexpectedly on April 6, 2024.
Known to many as Berry, he spearheaded the Fairfax Hockey League, the first multi-level adult hockey league in Virginia 40 years ago. He earned his bachelor’s degree from George Washington University.
Berry is survived by his wife Elizabeth and their children Eileen and Jayden; his children Sejong and David from his former marriage to JinSook; his brothers Harry Weisiger and Henry Weisiger, and his sister Carol Dixon. Berry’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Fairfax, Virginia, June 6, 2025 — For 35 years, Sandra “Sandy” Sparger, guided many skaters through their figure skating careers. She is known for being a meticulous and skilled technician training her skaters for their U.S. Figure Skating tests. In 2022, more than 100 of her skaters passed their U.S. Figure Skating Gold Skating Skills test—a big accomplishment for skaters.
Sandy started skating in 1964 at the age of six. She trained at Fairfax Ice Arena and was coached by Audrey Weisiger, Joan Ogilvie, Mark and Anne Militano, and Fred Yankee. Sandy is a U.S. Figure Skating Triple Gold Medalist. She passed her U.S. Figure Skating Gold Medalist in Figures and Freestyle in 1974, and passed her U.S. Figure Skating Adult Gold moves in 2019. She would go on to medal in the South Atlantic regional competition at the Senior Ladies event. After her skating career she had left the rink, but the late Berry Weisiger, one of the owners of the ice rink, ran into her at a store and convinced Sandy to return to the rink as a coach.
Fairfax Ice Arena is proud to have had Sandy train and coach for 35 years. She has enriched the lives of so many of the staff, coaches, skaters and parents here at the rink. She showed us all how to navigate skating and coaching with discipline, attention to detail, and most importantly with an abundance of care, joy and hearty laughs. We wish Sandy all the best and thank her for 35 years of incredible skating and coaching.
