Policies

  • Payment for freestyle sessions must be made online in advance before the skater goes on the ice.
  • Registered freestyle session skaters must check-in with staff before going on the ice. Fairfax Ice Arena reserves the right to ask a skater to step off the session, interrupt a skater during the session and during their private lesson to check-in.
  • Fairfax Ice Arena staff monitors the freestyle sessions to ensure that the skaters on the session are registered and are following etiquette.
  • Skaters who go on the ice during a session and are not registered will be charged the freestyle session rate and an additional 3 credits, and may be asked to step off the ice and leave the session while still incurring charges for the freestyle session rate and an additional 3 credits
  • Skaters must cancel 48 hours in advance or lose their credits.
  • Payment of the freestyle session does not include the price of a private lesson. All payments for private lessons must go through the Fairfax Ice Arena payment system online.
  • Always exercise caution during freestyle sessions and follow freestyle session policies.

Maintenance Week: Closed August 21 – 27

​Fairfax Ice Arena and its Pro Shop, will be closed for maintenance on August 21 – 27. For safety reasons, no one is allowed inside the building except for scheduled staff. Coaches and skaters, please be sure to plan ahead to have your items and skating equipment in your possession before we are closed for maintenance.

Train at Fairfax Ice Arena

Our freestyle sessions are the designated times for high-level figure skaters to train and practice. We offer level-specific freestyle sessions Monday-Friday, high performance specialty sessions focusing on edge work, off-ice conditioning, and additional training tools to aid figure skaters in their development. 

We are located in Fairfax, Virginia, minutes from Washington, DC, the Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Reagan National Airport (DCA). Our skaters have benefitted from training with national, Worlds, Olympic and international coaches, competitors and choreographers, former ice show performers and ice show company principal skaters. Our skaters have also trained alongside other national and international competitive skaters who visit our rink to train with our coaches.

​​Fairfax Ice Arena is proud to be the home ice rink of the Skating Club of Northern Virginia (SCNV). Founded in 1975, SCNV is a member club of U.S. Figure Skating, the governing body for the sport of figure skating in the United States. Visit scnv.org for more information about this club organization.

​Levels (ends June 16)

Levels are defined as the level that a skater will be competing in during the upcoming season. Instructor approval is required. If you do not have an instructor, please see the lesson office.

  • B. Low (ends June 16):Beta to Freestyle 6 (Basic 5 - Free Skate 6)
    B. Low (begins June 19): Beta to Freestyle 6 (Basic 5 - Free Skate 6)

  • Mix (ends June 16):Freestyle 2 and up (Free Skate 1 and up)
    Mix(begins June 19): Freestyle 1 and up (Pre-Free skate formerly Basic 8, and up)

  • Med/High (begins June 19): Consistent Axel and up
  • High (begins June 19): Double Lutz and Up; no moves or dance allowed

  • Stroking: A specialty freestyle session. A coach is included in the session. Please see the schedule for level-specific stroking sessions. Skaters must pay for this specialty freestyle session in advance before the skater goes on the ice like you would a normal freestyle session.

  • Spins: A specialty freestyle session. There will be no coach provided in the session and skaters do not need a coach to do the session. Only spins are allowed on the ice during this session. Skaters must pay for this specialty freestyle session in advance before the skater goes on the ice like you would a normal freestyle session.


​Specialty Session

Specialty sessions are specified freestyle sessions for jumps, stroking, spins or edge and footwork. These sessions may be taught by coaches with expertise in these areas.

Slight Afternoon Schedule Changes

Schedules for the Summer Training Center freestyle sessions will change slightly in the afternoons on the following weeks:

  • June 26 – 30
  • July 17 – 21
  • August 14 – 18

Train with our coaches

Are you looking to train with our coaches at Fairfax Ice Arena? Credentialed through Professional Skaters Association, U.S. Figure Skating and SafeSport, our coaches combine advanced techniques with a passion for teaching to help students master the skills needed to achieve their goals in figure skating.

  • Our coaches have trained skaters who have successfully competed in regional, sectional, collegiate, national, international competitions, Worlds and the Olympics.
  • Our skaters have gone on to become competitive figure skaters, and work for national and international ice show production companies, and become competitive figure skating coaches and choreographers. 

To schedule your first private lesson with our instructors, please submit a private lesson request form. We will follow up with you in two weeks (minimum). During the winter season and competition season, you may see follow-ups take as long as 3-4 weeks. 

Be informed in case of inclement weather

We post cancellations at the top of the home page of our website, and on our Instagram. Fairfax Ice Arena does NOT follow any school or federal office weather-cancellations and holidays.

If you would like to cancel your freestyle session, cancellation policies apply.  

Contact your private lesson instructor(s) directly 24 hours in advance to cancel your private lessons.

Rates, Packages, and Levels

The following are the credit packages and session credit rates for this season's freestyle sessions from August 29, 2022 – June 16, 2023.​ The Summer Training Center season will be from June 19, 2023 – August 18, 2023.

Each freestyle session is assigned a session credit rate. For example, a 40 minute freestyle session costs 5 credits. You can either purchase the amount of credits you need to skate the session, or purchase a credit package.

A single credit is $3.10. Credit packages are available for skaters who would like to purchase credits in bulk to save.

You must purchase credits first and then register for freestyle sessions.

*Summer special discount rate expires September 1, 2023.

How to sign-up for freestyle sessions 

  • Login or create your account. Please note that this account is different from the account you use to pay your coaches and register for group lessons.
  • You must purchase freestyle session credits or a credit package before booking your freestyle session.
  • To purchase freestyle session credits, go to the “online store" tab. Next to the question "Would you like to purchase credits or rent a locker?" select "Freestyle Sessions" in the dropdown box.
  • Purchase your credits based on the amount of credits you need for a session or purchase a credit package based on how many sessions you might be skating for in a span of a day, week, month or for the season.  
  • Once you purchase your credits or credit package, go to the “Freestyle Sessions” tab to sign up for the sessions you would like to skate.
